How to Use a Bed Liner Coating on a Wooden Deck

So you've seen how amazing bed liner is on your truck, but there's more you can do with it. Let's check out what you can do with bed liner on your wooden garden furniture and deck

Some of you might be asking, “Why would I want to use a bed liner coating on a wooden deck?” Let me explain.

Reasons to Use Bed Liner Coating on a Wooden Deck

Durabak Bed Liner is actually a extremely high grade one part polyurethane and it's really great on wood! Durabak will seep into the grain and give very long lasting protection to wooden decks and furniture. Durabak is so tough that it's perfect for protecting your furniture and deck year and year through all the seasons with no fuss.

When it comes to a wooden deck, there are many reasons you’d consider applying a bed liner coating. Here are the main advantages:
  • Protects wood from rotting
  • Keeps wood from deteriorating
  • It’s easy to do
  • Anyone can do it
  • Creates a non-slip texture
  • The process is quick
  • Won’t need to be reapplied often
When you are selecting a bed liner coating, we recommend Durabak. It can be used on wood surfaces, unlike some products that can only be applied to metal. In addition, you can apply the coating with a roller.

Applying Bed Liner Coating on a Wooden Deck

Here’s your step by step guide to applying the bed liner coating on a wooden deck.

Materials to Prepare

  • Hose
  • Household detergent
  • Broom
  • 60-grit sandpaper
  • Xylene
  • Bed liner coating
  • Paint roller
  • Paint tray
  • Foam brush
  • Protective gear

Step #1

Use your hose to spray the wooden surface to completely remove any debris or dirt from the surface. Then, clean the surface with non-chlorinated household detergent, like Spic ‘n Span and rinse with your hose again. When the deck is dry, sweep the surface to remove any leftover dirt.

Step #2

When the surface is clean, rough up the wood with 60-grit sandpaper. Then, wipe down the surface with xylene to prepare it for the bed liner coating.

Step #3

Open your can of bed liner and stir it to ensure an even coat. Pour the bed liner coating into your tray, only enough to cover the bottom. Dip your roller brush into the coating. Just be sure you only get the bottom part of the roller wet. Then, roll your brush on the slope of the tray to ensure all the sides get wet. Roll it on one plank of the deck while moving up and down. Do this with each plank of the deck until everything is covered. Allow the coating to dry and then add a second coat. You will typically need to wait about an hour between coats and sometimes it will require a third. This is because the wood is an absorbent material, so 3 coats are necessary.

Step #4

If there are areas that were hard to reach with the roller brush, feel free to use a foam brush for touch up work. Then, allow the coating to dry a full 24 hours before doing anything further with it. Once it is dry, you might notice a few other spots that require touch up work. If there are spots that you want to have extra grip, you can use textured Durabak for the top coat or two.

Step #5

Step back and admire the job you did. Invite some people over to give you further approval of a job well done.
