How much Durabak do I need?
If you're planning a Durabak project and don't know how much you need, we've put together some simple tables to help you work that out.
Just find the project header that closest resembles your project and you should find the answer you're looking for in one of the tables below.
If you don't find the information you need on this page then just hit that chat button on the bottom right to speak to an expert.
As a general rule of thumb you should always try and measure the area you are looking to coat with Durabak so you can work out exactly how much you need.
A gallon of Textured Durabak is enough to coat 60 square feet with 2 coats, while a gallon of smooth Durabak will go further, covering 75 sq. ft with 2 coats. That's because the rubber granules take up space in the can meaning less coverage, which in turn makes the price lower.
You'll see wood mentioned a bunch in the tables on this page. That's because wood is absorbent so you will need a full coat of Durabak just for a base coat; hence numbers are higher. The same applies for concrete which is also absorbent by nature.
On the right side of the page you will see a list of different materials that Durabak can be applied to, along with clear and concise instructions for a successful application to each of them.
You can jump to the table you need by clicking the title below:
- Truck Beds
- Truck Exteriors
- Car / Jeep Full Exterior
- RV / Motorhome Roof
- Trailer
- Enclosed Trailers
- Houseboat Roofs
- Boat Floors
Indoor and Outdoor Durabak have identical coverage.
TRUCK BEDS
To cover the entire inside of a truck bed, bed base, and interior walls on all 4 sides with 2 coats of Durabak. Although the table includes the amounts for Smooth Durabak we recommend using textured.

TRAILERS
Trailers come in many varieties, we've tried to list the most common sizes below.
When we mention wood you'll see we've added in some Durabak for the base coat - as mentioned above, wood is absorbent and will soak up a full coat's worth of Durabak. If you are looking to do a trailer in one of the sizes below that is NOT made from wood - simply remove the Durabak base coat from the calculation. If you are looking to apply to wood but are on a budget, you can use a latex wood primer like KILZ instead of a Durabak base coat.
e.g. a 7' x 14' wood trailer needs 3 quarts of smooth for the base and 2 gallons textured - so a 7' x 14' steel trailer just needs 2 gallons textured
Description | How much Durabak do I need for a Textured Application? | How much Smooth Durabak do I need? |
7' x 14' wood open trailer | 3 quarts smooth for base and 2 gallons textured | 2 gallons and 1 quart |

HOUSEBOAT ROOF
If you need to recoat the roof of your houseboat we recommend using a first coat of textured Durabak and a top coat of Smooth. If you want to just go with a smooth finish (2 coats of smooth) then simply double the amount of smooth mentioned and don't get the textured. If you want two coats of textured for a full texture finish, simply double the amount of texture.

BOAT FLOORS
If you're looking to replace the carpet in your boat or just put something down for some heat and sound insulation, Durabak is the product for you! Here are some 'rule of thumb' guidelines for how much Durabak customers use on their boats. These measurements are for a Bass-tracker type boat.
There are 3 columns, Textured, Smooth and Semi-Textured - Semi-Textured is for applications where you would use textured for the first coat for grip and smooth for the top coat to make it barefoot friendly.
Boat | Textured Finish | Smooth Finish | Semi-Textured |
up to 16' | 1 gallon | 1 gallon | 2 quarts of each |
up to 20' | 2 gallons | 1 gall. & 2 qts | 1 gall. of each |
up to 24' | 3 gallons | 2 gall. 2 quarts | 1 gall. & 1 qt of each |
up to 30' | 4 gallons | 3 gallons 2 quarts | 1 gall. & 3 qts of each |
If you are coating a pontoon boat, just measure width x length to get your total square foot of coverage needed and figure out based on the coverage table.
Square Ft. | Textured Finish | Smooth Finish | Bare-foot Friendly Half/Half |
up to 60sq.ft | 1 gallon | 1 gallon | 2 qts each |
up to 120sq.ft | 2 gallons | 2 gallons | 1 gallon each |
up to 180 sq.ft | 3 gallons | 2 gallons + 2 qts | 1 gall. 2 qts each |
up to 240 sq.ft | 4 gallons | 3 gallons + 1qt | 2 gallons each |
up to 300 sq.ft | 5 gallons | 4 gallons | 2 gall smth. 2 gall, 2 qts tex. |
